The Impact of Diesel Exhaust on Michigan

A study by Abt Associates, following EPA Scientific Advisory Board methodologies concluded the Annual Diesel Fine Particle Health Impacts Projected for 2010 are as follows:

  • 443 Michiganders suffered premature deaths thanks to diesel exhaust
  • 648 suffered non-fatal heart attacks
  • 15,004 suffered asthma attacks
  • 57,561 work days were lost

Dark Red indicates levels of greatest threat from diesel pollution

Since 2007, federal standards have required new diesel engines to be 90% cleaner than they are today.  But since these improved standards only apply to new engines, more than 11 million diesel engines remain on the road with little or no pollution control. This will continue for decades to come, unless we act now.

Solutions are available today. The same fuels and technologies that make 90% particulate matter reductions possible from new engines are available for in-use engines as well.

We support policies that will minimize health risks from diesel pollution, reducing diesel particulate emissions by 70% by 2020, 55% by 2015, and 40% by 2012.

With your help, Michigan can largely eliminate health risks from diesel vehicles by:

  • retrofitting emission controls
  • switching to cleaner fuels
  • rebuilding or replacing older engines
  • eliminating unnecessary idling
  • improving the efficiency of freight and transportation systems
  • building institutional support for diesel pollution prevention
